Rina and Huey flew in from Calgary for a few days in Phoenix, with an Omar Apollo show, a birthday, and a convertible Mustang they'd snagged on a free upgrade. They'd been together ten years, engaged, and had never taken a single engagement photo, so this trip was obviously the perfect moment to fix that.

We started at Heritage Square in downtown Phoenix, one of the oldest surviving residential blocks in the city. All brick and Victorian detail, it’s the kind of place that holds light beautifully in late afternoon. The architecture gave us texture and shadow to work with, and Rina and Huey settled into it quickly. They're easy together in the way that only a decade of history makes possible, not performing anything, just present.

From there, we drove out to Papago Park in the Mustang was part of the plan from the start. Rina had mentioned it when she booked, a free convertible rental that felt too good not to use, and she was right. There's something about a car like that, open sky overhead, desert moving past the windows. It fit the 60s-inspired tone they were drawn to, and it gave us a few of the most cinematic shots of the day.

Papago Park at golden hour is one of those locations that does a lot of the work for you. The red buttes catch the last light in a way that feels almost staged, and the desert floor goes warm and still as the sun drops. We moved through the park as the light shifted, open trail shots, close portraits, the kind of slow wandering that lets a couple forget they're being photographed.

That's where Rina and Huey really came alive. Now that they’d really started to get comfortable in front of my camera, the photos started feeling even more like them: laughing mid-stride, holding on to each other in the quiet, gentle kisses on the cheek, Rina’s ring catching light against the desert background.

As the sun went below the horizon, we used the Mustang's headlights as our final light source, two figures in front of the glow, the park dark behind them. It was a fitting end to a shoot that had that same quality throughout: unplanned, warm, and exactly right.

Rina and Huey's Papago Park engagement session came together the way the best ones do, not because every detail was locked in weeks in advance, but because the people showing up were genuinely themselves. Ten years in, and they still move through the world like they're glad to be doing it together. That comes through in every frame.
