Laurie + Dalton

Autumn meadow engagement session at Snowbowl in Flagstaff, AZ.
Laurie and Dalton have one of those classic love stories, but with a twist. They met in high school, went down different paths for awhile, and then found their way back to each other later on. He proposed to Laurie on a boat off the coast of Waikiki where he grew up, with their closest family around to witness it happen. For their engagement session, they wanted the contrast of the mountains, so we chose to embrace the fall colors in Flagstaff.
Arizona Snowbowl sits about 7 miles up the San Francisco Peaks outside Flagstaff, and in autumn, it looks like something out of a storybook. The aspens go gold, the ferns turn rust, and the meadows stretch out wide with mountain views in every direction. We split the afternoon between the Aspen Loop Trail and Kachina Trail, which gave us everything: dense forest, open clearings, a reflecting pond that caught the clouds perfectly, and enough elevation to feel genuinely far from the rest of the world.
Laurie wore a wildflower-embroidered tulle dress with floral, light blue cowboy boots (shout out to Boot Barn), and Dalton wore a complimentary button down and his trucker hat — the perfect Arizona pair.
We started in the forest, where the light comes through the trees in long afternoon strips. Laurie and Dalton were playful together, quick to laugh, the kind of couple that doesn't need much direction before they just do their own thing. They chased each other through the aspens and the pines, and shared soft kisses under the canopy filtered light. We played in light and shadows, finding little sun spots like spotlights blasting through the trees made just to feature them.
From there we moved out into the open meadow, where the scale shifts completely. Two people small against the San Francisco Peaks, the sky enormous behind them. They shared a first dance in a field full of dried wildflowers, the first of many dances in this next phase of life together. We found the pond and got the reflection shot I'd been hoping for, Laurie's white dress and the clouds above them mirrored in still water.
As the light dropped into golden hour, we ended back near the tree line, the late sun cutting low through the pines. Laurie leaned into Dalton on a fallen log as they watched the sun set across the expanse.
Laurie and Dalton got married in 2025 in Laveen, and it was an honor to be there for that too. But this day, up in the aspens with the fall color all around them and no timeline to keep, was something on its own. They got to have the best of both worlds — a little adventure in the outdoors with just two of them, and a wedding celebration later on with everyone they love. If you’re at the beginning stages of your wedding journey, I can’t recommend this approach enough.
Arizona Snowbowl in autumn is one of the most underused engagement locations in the state. If you're looking for Flagstaff engagement locations with real variety, the mountain delivers in a way that very few places can.
